Backing Up to a Wall and Spraying (Urine Marking)
Scent Marking & Communication
A cat that backs up to a vertical surface, lifts and quivers its upright tail and releases a fine spray of urine is scent-marking — a form of long-distance communication, quite distinct from ordinary litter-box toileting.
Marking, Not Toileting
Spraying looks nothing like normal urination. Instead of squatting over a horizontal surface, the cat stands tall, backs up to a wall, door frame or piece of furniture, treads with its back feet and quivers a stiffly raised tail while depositing a small amount of urine at nose height. The goal is not to empty the bladder but to leave a scent message that other cats will read long after the cat has moved on.
What the Message Says
Sprayed urine carries a rich chemical signature announcing the cat's identity, sex and reproductive status, and it reassures the sprayer by layering its own familiar scent over its territory. Intact toms and queens spray far more than neutered cats, and marking spikes when a cat feels its territory is contested — a new pet or baby, an unfamiliar cat visible through a window, moving house, or rearranged furniture can all trigger it.
Should You Worry?
Indoor spraying is one of the most common reasons cats are surrendered, so it is worth addressing calmly rather than punishing, which only raises stress and makes it worse. Neutering resolves most hormonally-driven spraying. For neutered cats, treat it as a stress signal: identify what changed, clean marked spots with an enzymatic cleaner (never ammonia, which smells like urine), add resources such as extra litter trays and vertical space, and use synthetic facial-pheromone diffusers. Always rule out a medical cause first — cystitis and urinary problems can look like marking — so see a vet if it appears suddenly, especially with straining or blood.
🐾 Most common in
Far more common in unneutered cats of both sexes; in neutered cats it is usually triggered by stress, multi-cat tension, or a perceived threat to territory such as strange cats outdoors.
