Browser

Browser was an orange tabby who lived and worked at the public library in White Settlement, a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas, after arriving as a shelter cat around 2010 to help with mice. For years he was a contented fixture among the bookshelves, greeting visitors and dozing in the sunshine, until in June 2016 he became the unlikely centre of a civic storm.

The city council voted 2–1 to give the library thirty days to rehome him — a decision the mayor said was really retaliation after an employee had been refused permission to bring a puppy to City Hall. The vote backfired spectacularly. News of Browser's eviction spread around the world, an online petition to save him gathered more than 12,000 signatures, and the council was flooded with over a thousand messages of support. Two weeks later, the same council reversed course with a unanimous 3–0 vote to let him stay.

The mayor later declared that Browser would be the library's cat for life, and the whiskered bibliophile went back to his quiet routine among the readers. He remained a much-loved ambassador for the little library until his death from natural causes in 2025, a gentle reminder of how deeply a community can rally around a single well-loved cat.
