Hamilton the Hipster Cat

Hamilton — full name Hamilton the Hipster Cat — became famous for one striking visual feature: a perfectly-shaped grey moustache sitting beneath his nose against an otherwise white face, giving him the precise look of a Victorian gentleman or a 21st-century coffee-shop philosopher. He was adopted by photographer JR Bellanca in 2011 from a litter at a friend's house in San Francisco. A single Instagram photo posted shortly afterwards led to his account being shared widely on Tumblr and Reddit, and Hamilton was named "Internet Cat of the Year" at the Walker Art Center's Internet Cat Video Festival in 2014. Unlike many viral cats whose appeal faded with the meme cycle, Hamilton's account has retained a steady following for over a decade, partly because Bellanca consistently used the platform for shelter advocacy. Hamilton has appeared in print campaigns, several books, and the documentary 'Lil Bub & Friendz'. He still lives quietly with Bellanca in San Francisco and his appearance has not changed in over a decade — the moustache is permanent.
