Jock (Churchill's Cat)

Winston Churchill was a lifelong, devoted cat lover — he kept cats throughout his life and reportedly held up Cabinet meetings to wait for his cats to leave the room. The most famous was a marmalade kitten given to him for his 88th birthday in 1962, which he named Jock. Churchill became so attached to Jock that he specified in his will that a marmalade cat named Jock should always have a home at Chartwell, his beloved country house in Kent (now a National Trust property). This wish has been faithfully honoured. The current resident, Jock VIII, took up residence at Chartwell in 2020. Each successive Jock has been a ginger tom, usually sourced from a rescue organisation, and each inherits the position of "chief mouser and supervisor" at the house. The lineage has now continued for over sixty years, making it one of the longest-running examples of a specific cat tradition being maintained in British history. Visitors to Chartwell frequently report that meeting the current Jock is the highlight of their visit.
