Cleft Palate

A gap in the roof of the mouth, usually present from birth, that lets milk and food pass into the nose and airways and makes feeding dangerous for young kittens.

A cleft palate is a gap in the roof of the mouth that leaves an abnormal connection between the mouth and the nasal cavity. In most cats it is congenital, meaning the kitten is born with it because the structures that should knit together during development in the womb never quite fused. The result is that milk and, later, food can pass upward into the nose and even down into the airways instead of travelling safely to the stomach.

For a nursing kitten this is a serious problem. Owners often notice milk bubbling from the nostrils, coughing or choking at the teat, and a youngster that simply fails to grow while its littermates thrive. The greatest danger is aspiration pneumonia — infection that takes hold when milk or food is inhaled into the lungs — which can be rapidly fatal in a tiny kitten. Recurrent sneezing, nasal discharge and noisy breathing are common accompaniments.

The long-term solution is surgery to close the defect, but tiny kittens are usually too fragile for this until they have grown, so much of the early work is about keeping them safely fed and free of chest infection, frequently with tube or assisted feeding. With dedicated nursing and well-timed surgical repair, many affected cats go on to lead full lives, which is why early veterinary involvement makes such a difference.

🔍 Causes

A cleft palate forms when the two halves of the roof of the mouth fail to fuse properly during development in the womb, leaving an opening between the mouth and nasal cavity. It is most often congenital, arising from genetic factors, certain infections, poor nutrition or exposure to some drugs or toxins during pregnancy. Occasionally a cleft is acquired later in life through trauma, such as a fall or a road accident, or severe mouth infection.

🛡 Prevention

Congenital clefts are hard to prevent entirely, but good queen care — sound nutrition, vaccination, parasite control and avoiding unnecessary medicines or toxins during pregnancy — reduces the risk. Breeders should avoid repeating matings that have produced affected kittens. Preventing acquired clefts means protecting cats from road accidents, falls from height and untreated dental disease.

💊 Treatment

The definitive treatment is surgical repair to close the gap, but this is usually delayed until the kitten is a few months old and strong enough for anaesthesia. In the meantime the priority is keeping the kitten fed and free of infection — often by tube feeding or careful assisted feeding to bypass the defect, keeping it upright, and treating any chest infection promptly with veterinary care. A vet, and often a surgical specialist, will plan the timing and technique of repair for each kitten.

When to see a vet: See a vet urgently if a newborn kitten brings milk down its nose, chokes while feeding, fails to thrive, or develops laboured breathing, as aspiration into the lungs is life-threatening. Any adult cat that suddenly develops nasal food reflux after an injury also needs prompt veterinary assessment.
