Flat-Chested Kitten Syndrome
A developmental deformity of the ribcage in young kittens, where the chest becomes flattened from top to bottom, which can crowd the heart and lungs in more severe cases.

Flat-chested kitten syndrome is a problem of the very young, appearing in the first weeks of life while a kitten's ribcage is still soft and forming. Instead of developing the normal rounded, barrel shape, the chest flattens from top to bottom, so it looks squashed when viewed from the side. In milder cases this is mostly a cosmetic quirk that the kitten grows out of, but a badly flattened chest can leave less room for the heart and lungs to work.
The reasons behind it remain unclear, and vets generally suspect a combination of influences rather than a single cause — inheritance, the kitten's position among its littermates, early nutrition and other factors have all been proposed. What is clearer is that the crucial window is early, when intervention and good care can make the most difference.
Encouragingly, many affected kittens do well. With warmth, excellent nutrition and gentle encouragement to move and build the muscles around the chest, a lot of them improve steadily as their skeleton matures. The kittens that need the most attention are those whose breathing is affected, and these deserve prompt veterinary assessment so they can be supported through their vulnerable first weeks.

The exact cause is not fully understood and is likely to be a mix of factors. Genetics, position in the womb, nutrition and possibly early respiratory issues have all been suggested. The deformity develops in the first weeks of life as the pliable ribcage of a young kitten flattens rather than forming its normal rounded shape, sometimes alongside other chest wall abnormalities.

Because the cause is uncertain, prevention is limited, but ensuring the mother and kittens are well nourished, warm and raised in clean, low-stress conditions supports healthy development. Where a queen repeatedly produces affected litters, breeders are advised to review the pairing. Early recognition and good supportive care give affected kittens the best outcome.

Care depends on how badly the chest is affected. Many mildly affected kittens improve on their own as they grow and the skeleton strengthens, helped by good nutrition and gentle encouragement to move and build muscle. Some benefit from physiotherapy-style handling or supportive measures guided by a vet. Severely affected kittens whose breathing is compromised need veterinary assessment and, occasionally, more intensive support. Keeping the kitten warm, well fed and thriving gives it the best chance.
