Cat Birthday & Gotcha-Day Cake
A savoury celebration 'cake' with no flour, sugar or dairy — a baked salmon-and-chicken loaf, frosted with fluffy mashed sweet potato. The safe way to mark a birthday or adoption anniversary without a trip to the vet.
- Difficulty
- Medium
- Time
- 40 min
- Makes
- 1 small cake (share over 2–3 days)
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 small skinless chicken breast (about 120g), cooked and finely shredded
- 1 small tin of salmon in spring water (drained), or 100g cooked fresh salmon
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp plain cooked sweet potato, plus 3 tbsp more for the 'frosting'
- A pinch of dried catnip or a few flakes of nori, to decorate (optional)
👩🍳 Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease one ramekin or a small round mould with a dab of the salmon oil or a little water.
- Mash 2 tbsp of the cooked sweet potato in a bowl, then mix in the shredded chicken, drained salmon and the egg until it holds together as a soft batter.
- Spoon the mixture into the ramekin, pressing it level, and bake for 20–25 minutes until firm to the touch and cooked through.
- While it bakes, mash the remaining 3 tbsp of sweet potato with a splash of warm water until smooth and pipeable — this is the 'frosting'.
- Let the little cake cool completely, then turn it out and spread or pipe the sweet-potato frosting over the top.
- Decorate with a pinch of catnip or a few torn flakes of nori, and serve your cat a small slice — never the whole cake at once.
📝 Notes
This is a treat, not a meal, and is not complete nutrition — serve a slice no bigger than a couple of tablespoons and keep it to under a tenth of the day's calories. Use salmon in spring water, never brine or oil, and make sure no bones remain. Absolutely no chocolate, sugar, flour, dairy, xylitol, onion or garlic — the classic human birthday-cake ingredients are toxic or indigestible to cats. Store the rest covered in the fridge for up to three days, or freeze in slices. Check with your vet first if your cat has a fish allergy, kidney issues or a sensitive stomach.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
