Cod & Courgette Light Flakes
Steamed white fish flaked with a little soft courgette — light, low in fat and easy on the stomach, useful for cats recovering their appetite.

- 2–3 small meals
🧺 Ingredients
- 120 g fresh cod or other plain white fish fillet, skinless and boneless
- 1 tablespoon finely grated courgette
- Water for steaming
👩🍳 Method
- Check the fish thoroughly for bones, running a finger along the fillet and removing anything you find.
- Place the fillet in a steamer basket, or on a plate over a pan of simmering water, and steam for 6–8 minutes until it flakes easily.
- Add the grated courgette for the final 2 minutes so it softens without turning to mush.
- Lift out and allow to cool until barely warm.
- Flake the fish gently with a fork, checking once more for bones, and fold the courgette through.
- Serve a small portion on its own or over your cat's usual food.
Nutrition: Cod is very lean, low in fat and unusually easy to digest, which is why vets often suggest plain white fish for cats recovering from an upset stomach. It supplies clean protein, iodine and B12, while a little courgette adds moisture and gentle fibre without meaningful calories.
📝 Notes
Feed white fish occasionally rather than daily — an all-fish diet can lead to thiamine deficiency and, over time, to nutritional imbalance. Never serve raw fish, and never include the bones. This is a topper or a light meal for a cat with a delicate appetite, not a complete diet. Refrigerate for up to 2 days.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
