🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 small fillet of cooked mackerel (plain, no salt, all bones removed)
  • 1 tablespoon plain cooked, mashed sweet potato
  • A little plain water or unsalted cooking water to loosen

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Steam or poach the mackerel plainly until cooked through, then let it cool.
  2. Flake the fish carefully with your fingers, checking closely for any small bones and removing them all.
  3. Fold in the mashed sweet potato and loosen with a little water to a soft, spoonable texture.
  4. Serve a tablespoon or two at room temperature as a topper over your cat's usual food.
  5. Refrigerate any leftovers and use within two days.
Nutrition: Mackerel is a natural source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which support skin, coat and joint health, while a little sweet potato adds moisture and gentle fibre.

📝 Notes

Oily fish like mackerel is a treat rather than a staple: fed too often it can crowd out a balanced diet and, over time, oily fish has been linked to vitamin E depletion, so keep it occasional. Always debone thoroughly and never add salt, and skip this for cats on a vet-prescribed diet without checking first. Sweet potato is a small carbohydrate garnish here, not the main event.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
