Rabbit & Carrot Novel-Protein Stew

A gentle, soupy stew built on rabbit — a genuinely novel protein — for cats trialling a simplified diet with their vet.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 180 g plain rabbit meat, boneless
  • 1 small carrot, peeled
  • 150 ml unsalted water or plain rabbit/chicken broth
  • A vet-recommended supplement if rabbit is fed regularly (ask your vet)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Cut the rabbit into small pieces and check carefully that no bone fragments remain.
  2. Simmer the rabbit gently in the water or broth until fully cooked and tender.
  3. Steam or boil the carrot separately until very soft, then mash it smooth.
  4. Finely chop or shred the cooled rabbit and stir it back into a little of the cooking liquid with the mashed carrot.
  5. Serve warm but not hot as a soft, soupy stew, and refrigerate the rest.
  6. Introduce a small amount first to check it agrees with your cat.
Nutrition: Lean rabbit is a low-fat, easily digested protein many cats have never eaten before, which makes it valuable for sensitivity trials, while soft carrot adds a little gentle fibre and beta-carotene to the broth.

📝 Notes

Rabbit is a useful novel protein for cats reacting to chicken or fish, but any true elimination diet must be guided by your vet. This is a topper or meal component, not a complete balanced meal, so keep it under 10% of daily calories unless your vet has balanced the recipe. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
