Homemade cat food
Rabbit & Courgette Sensitive-Tummy Mince
A gently cooked mince of lean rabbit — a novel protein many cats have never eaten — with a little courgette, aimed at cats with sensitive stomachs or suspected food intolerances.
- Difficulty
- Medium
- Time
- 25 min
- Makes
- 4 days
🧺 Ingredients
- 150g lean rabbit mince
- 1 tablespoon finely grated courgette
- A splash of unsalted water for cooking
👩🍳 Method
- Warm a non-stick pan and add the rabbit mince with a splash of water.
- Cook gently, breaking it up, for about 8 to 10 minutes until no pink remains.
- Stir in the grated courgette for the last two minutes so it softens.
- Drain off any excess liquid and let everything cool to room temperature.
- Serve a small spoonful as a topper or light meal, and refrigerate the rest for up to four days or freeze in portions.
Nutrition: Rabbit is a very lean, low-fat red-white meat rich in protein and B vitamins, and as a novel protein it is far less likely to trigger an existing food allergy, while a little courgette adds moisture and gentle fibre without much bulk.
📝 Notes
Rabbit is lean, easily digestible and, for most cats, a genuinely novel meat — which makes it useful when trialling a diet for a cat with suspected sensitivities to common proteins like chicken or fish. As with any new food, introduce it slowly over several days, and run any true elimination-diet trial under veterinary guidance so nothing else muddies the result. This is a treat or topper, not a complete, balanced meal on its own.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
