Sardine & Sweet Potato Mash
A soft, aromatic mash of sardine and sweet potato — a moist, omega-rich topper that tempts poorly cats to eat and adds a little variety to a bland day.

- 4–5 small servings
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 small sardine in spring water (drained, bones mashed in)
- 2 tbsp cooked, mashed plain sweet potato
- 1 tbsp warm water or unsalted bone broth
👩🍳 Method
- Cook and mash the sweet potato plainly, with no butter, salt or seasoning.
- Drain the sardine and mash it thoroughly, including the soft bones, which are a safe calcium source.
- Combine the sardine and sweet potato in a bowl.
- Stir in the warm water or bone broth a little at a time until you reach a soft, spoonable mash.
- Serve a small spoonful at room temperature, on its own or as a topper over regular food.
Nutrition: Sardines are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that support skin, coat and joints, and their soft edible bones add natural calcium. The strong aroma and moist texture make this mash excellent for tempting cats with a reduced appetite to start eating again.
📝 Notes
Store covered in the fridge for up to 2 days and serve slightly warmed to release the aroma. Use sardines packed in water, never oil or brine. Offer in small amounts — oily fish is a treat, and too much can upset the stomach.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
