Homemade cat food
Scallop & Pea Light Bites
Sweet, delicate scallop poached until just firm and flaked with a little pea — an occasional, low-fat seafood treat for a cat that loves something out of the ordinary.

- Makes
- 3 small servings
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 large fresh scallop (white meat), roughly 40–50 g
- 1 teaspoon plain cooked, mashed peas
- A little plain water
👩🍳 Method
- Rinse the scallop and pat it dry, removing any tough side muscle.
- Poach it gently in a little plain water for a couple of minutes until it turns opaque and just firm — do not overcook or it goes rubbery.
- Let it cool completely, then flake or finely chop it into small, cat-sized pieces.
- Mash the cooked peas and fold them through the flaked scallop.
- Moisten with a little plain water if needed and offer a small amount.
- Refrigerate any leftovers and use within a day, as shellfish spoils quickly.
Nutrition: Scallop is a lean, low-fat source of high-quality protein plus B12 and trace minerals, and a little pea adds gentle fibre and colour.
📝 Notes
Scallop is a rare, protein-rich treat, but shellfish is a common allergen — offer only a tiny amount the first time and skip it entirely for any cat with a known seafood sensitivity. Always serve it thoroughly cooked and completely plain, never raw and never with garlic, butter or seasoning. Because it is so novel and rich, keep it to an occasional indulgence, not a regular food.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
