Homemade cat food
Trout & Pea Gentle Flakes
Delicate poached trout flaked over a spoon of mashed peas — an omega-rich, easy-to-digest little meal that suits fussy eaters and cats who have tired of the same old white fish.

- Makes about 8 small portions
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 small skinless, boneless trout fillet (about 100 g)
- 2 tbsp fresh or frozen peas (no salt, no butter)
- A splash of plain water or unsalted broth to loosen
👩🍳 Method
- Poach the trout gently in barely-simmering water for 6–8 minutes, until it flakes easily.
- Lift it out, let it cool, and go through it carefully with your fingers to remove every bone and any skin.
- Steam or boil the peas until soft, then mash them to a coarse paste and let cool.
- Fork the trout into fine flakes and fold through the mashed peas.
- Loosen with a little water or broth so the texture is soft and scoopable, and serve just warm.
Nutrition: Trout delivers marine omega-3s (EPA and DHA) that support skin, coat and joints, along with easily digestible protein; the peas add a little gentle fibre and plant colour without overwhelming a cat's meat-first diet.
📝 Notes
Trout is an oily fish, so keep portions small and offer it as an occasional treat rather than a daily meal — a couple of teaspoons for an average cat. Never season it, and always double-check for bones, which in trout are fine and easy to miss. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered dish and use within 2 days.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
