Homemade cat food
Turkey & Spinach Iron Loaf
A gently baked loaf of minced turkey with a little cooked spinach, offered as an occasional topper for cats that benefit from a richer, iron-supporting meal alongside their usual balanced food.

🧺 Ingredients
- 150g minced turkey (not too lean, so it stays moist)
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped cooked spinach
- 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
- A splash of unsalted water
👩🍳 Method
- Heat the oven to a moderate temperature and line a small dish or ramekin.
- Mix the minced turkey, finely chopped cooked spinach and egg yolk with a splash of water until evenly combined.
- Press the mixture into the dish and bake until the turkey is cooked all the way through and no pink remains.
- Let the little loaf cool completely, then slice or crumble a small amount over your cat’s normal meal.
- Keep the rest covered in the fridge for up to three days and warm gently before serving.
Nutrition: Turkey is a lean, highly digestible source of animal protein, while the egg yolk adds richness, and the tiny amount of spinach contributes a little iron and folate — though the protein, not the greens, is what matters most to an obligate carnivore.
📝 Notes
Spinach appears in some commercial cat foods in small amounts, but it is high in oxalates, so it should only ever be an occasional garnish and is best avoided entirely for any cat with a history of calcium-oxalate bladder stones or kidney disease — check with your vet first. This loaf is a treat and a topper, not a replacement for a complete, balanced diet, and homemade food should make up only a small part of what your cat eats unless a vet has formulated a full recipe for you.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
