Whitefish & Seaweed Iodine Flakes

A light, flaky topper built on gently poached white fish with the tiniest pinch of nori for natural iodine — a mineral the thyroid depends on. Perfect crumbled over a fussy cat's dinner.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 white fish fillet (cod, haddock or pollock), about 120g
  • 1 tsp finely crumbled plain nori (unsalted, unseasoned)
  • 1 egg white

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Poach the fish fillet in plain water for 6–8 minutes until it flakes easily, then lift out and let it cool.
  2. Carefully flake the fish, checking with your fingers for any bones and removing every one.
  3. Whisk the egg white and fold it through the flaked fish with the crumbled nori.
  4. Spread thinly on a lined tray and bake at 160°C (320°F) for 8–10 minutes until dry and crisp.
  5. Cool fully, then break into small flakes to scatter over meals.
Nutrition: White fish is lean, highly digestible protein, while a trace of nori supplies natural iodine — the building block the thyroid gland uses to make the hormones that govern a cat's metabolism.

📝 Notes

Use only plain, unseasoned nori — the flavoured sushi kind is loaded with salt and soy. A tiny pinch is plenty; seaweed is very concentrated in iodine and more is not better. Skip this recipe entirely for any cat diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or on a prescription thyroid diet, and check with your vet first if your cat has any thyroid history. Store flakes in an airtight jar for up to a week.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
