Felt Butterfly Flutter Teaser

A lightweight wand that flits and flutters like real winged prey

Light felt wings on the end of a wand catch the air and flutter unpredictably, triggering the stalk-and-pounce instinct far better than a toy dragged flatly across the floor.

🧺 You will need

  • 1 wooden dowel or bamboo cane (30–45cm)
  • 60–90cm of thin cord or strong thread
  • Two teardrop 'wings' cut from light felt, about 8cm long
  • A short strip of felt for the body
  • Needle and thread
  • Optional: a small pinch of catnip tucked into the body

🔧 How to make it

  1. Cut two teardrop wings and a small felt body strip.
  2. Pinch the body around the middle of the wings and stitch through so the wings splay out like a butterfly, adding a pinch of catnip inside the body if you like.
  3. Stitch or tie the cord securely to the body between the wings.
  4. Tie or screw the other end of the cord to the tip of the dowel.
  5. Give it a test flick — the wings should flutter and tumble as they move through the air.
  6. Play in short bursts, letting your cat 'catch' the butterfly regularly so the game stays rewarding.

💡 Tips

The lighter the felt, the more lifelike the flutter. Sweep the wand in arcs and let it drift down like a settling insect rather than dragging it in straight lines — the pause-and-flutter is what cats find irresistible.

Safety: Wand toys with cords must never be left out unattended — a cat can swallow or become tangled in loose string. Store it in a drawer between sessions. Check the stitching regularly and re-secure the wings before they can come loose.

📝 Notes

End every session with a clear 'catch' and a small treat so your cat feels the hunt paid off — teaser games that never let the cat win can leave them frustrated.
