Floating-Shelf Carpet Wall Perch

A plain floating shelf topped with carpet for a high wall lookout

An inexpensive floating shelf, fixed securely to a wall and topped with a scrap of carpet for grip, gives your cat a high perch to survey the room from — vertical territory in the space of a picture frame.

Difficulty
Medium
Time
1 hour
Cost
£10–£25

🧺 You will need

  • A sturdy floating shelf with concealed bracket (rated well above your cat's weight)
  • An offcut of carpet or a non-slip rug the size of the shelf
  • Wall plugs and screws suited to your wall type
  • A spirit level and drill
  • Strong non-toxic glue or a staple gun to fix the carpet

🔧 How to make it

  1. Choose a wall spot 1–1.5 m up, ideally near a window or beside furniture your cat can use as a step.
  2. Mark the bracket holes with a spirit level so the shelf sits perfectly flat, then drill and fit the correct wall plugs for your wall.
  3. Screw the bracket home firmly and slide the shelf on, checking it does not flex or wobble when you lean your full weight on it.
  4. Cut the carpet to the top of the shelf and glue or staple it down, tucking the edges under so nothing frays.
  5. Add a lower step — a second small shelf or a stool — if your cat needs an easier route up and down.
  6. Encourage your cat up with a treat and let them claim the new lookout at their own pace.

💡 Tips

A row of two or three shelves at staggered heights turns a bare wall into a climbing route. Placing the top perch by a window gives your cat a sunny spot and live 'cat TV' of the world outside.

Safety: This holds a live animal jumping on and off, so fixings are everything: screw into studs or use heavy-duty wall anchors rated well above your cat's weight, never just plasterboard alone. Test each shelf by pressing down hard before trusting it, keep the carpet firmly attached so it cannot slide, and make sure there is always a safe way down for an older or less agile cat.

📝 Notes

Cats feel safest when they can look down on their territory, and wall perches add that vertical space without taking up an inch of floor. A carpeted shelf is cheap, tidy and gives an indoor cat somewhere all their own to retreat and watch from.
