Scent-Swap Introduction Sock
A clean sock rubbed on one cat and offered to another to swap scents before they meet face to face
When introducing a new cat, or easing tension between two that live together, a scent-swap sock does the diplomacy for you: gently rubbed around one cat's cheeks and offered to the other, it lets each cat learn the newcomer's smell calmly and at a distance, long before any risky first meeting.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 5 minutes
- Cost
- £0 (an old sock)
🧺 You will need
- A clean, soft cotton sock (one per cat)
- Two cats to introduce, kept separated to start with
- Optional: a few treats to build a good association
🔧 How to make it
- Stroke the sock gently around one cat's cheeks, chin and forehead, where the friendly facial scent glands are, while the cat is relaxed.
- Leave that scented sock in the other cat's space — near a bed or feeding spot, not pushed into its face.
- Watch the reaction: calm sniffing or ignoring is good; hissing or backing away means go slower.
- Reward calm interest with a treat or a meal near the sock, so the new smell predicts good things.
- Repeat daily with a fresh scent each time, swapping in both directions, and only move on to seeing each other once both cats are relaxed around the socks.
💡 Tips
Scent is a cat's first language, and letting them meet by smell first prevents the flooding that a sudden face-to-face causes. Pairing the sock with food turns 'a strange cat exists' into 'good things happen near that smell'. You can rub the sock on doorways and furniture at cat height to spread a calm, shared scent through shared rooms.
📝 Notes
The single most useful, and most overlooked, step in introducing cats — it costs nothing, takes minutes, and prevents the botched first meetings that sour a relationship for months. Patience here saves a great deal of stress later.
