Window Perch Shelf
Give an indoor cat the best seat in the house
A sunlit window with a view of birds is the single most valuable piece of real estate in an indoor cat's world. Most sills are too narrow to lie on properly — a shelf fixes that in an afternoon.
- Difficulty
- Medium
- Time
- 1 hour
- Cost
- Around £15
🧺 You will need
- A pine shelf board, roughly 50cm × 30cm × 18mm
- Two heavy-duty shelf brackets rated for at least 15kg
- Wall plugs and screws suitable for your wall type
- A drill, spirit level and pencil
- A washable fleece blanket or a piece of carpet offcut
- Velcro strips or upholstery tacks to fix the covering
🔧 How to make it
- Pick the window with the best activity outside rather than the best light — birds, a feeder, a busy path. Cats want television more than they want a sunbed, though they will take both.
- Mark a height that lets the cat see out comfortably while lying down, usually 5–10cm below the sill line.
- Find the studs or use appropriate heavy-duty fixings. A cat landing on a shelf from a run-up delivers several times its body weight, and a shelf that fails once will never be trusted again.
- Mount the brackets level and screw the board down from above so no screw heads sit proud on the top surface.
- Cover the board with fleece or carpet, fixed with Velcro so it can be pulled off and washed — a sunny perch collects an astonishing amount of shed fur.
- Test the shelf hard with your own hands before the cat sees it. Push down, pull sideways, and lean on the front edge.
- Introduce it with a treat placed on the surface and a step or stool nearby, and let the cat find its own way up.
💡 Tips
Depth matters more than length. A cat needs enough room to lie fully on its side without any part overhanging, which usually means at least 28cm. If the window is high, add an intermediate step — a chest of drawers, a second small shelf — rather than expecting a single leap, especially for older or arthritic cats. Adding a window bird feeder outside turns the perch from a nice spot into an hours-a-day fixture.
📝 Notes
A washable cover and a monthly shake-out keeps the perch usable for years. Most cats claim it within a day.
