📜 History & origin
The Chartreux is one of the oldest natural breeds, believed to have been kept by Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble, France, as far back as the 13th century. The monks allegedly bred them partly for their quiet temperament. The breed was almost lost during World War II but was carefully preserved. They were first exported to the US in 1971.
🧼 Care & grooming
Weekly brushing is usually enough — their woolly coat is water-resistant and relatively low-maintenance. They are quiet, observant cats that enjoy company without demanding it. Their intelligence means they appreciate puzzle feeders and interactive play. They bond strongly with one person and are known for 'smiling' — their upturned mouth gives them a permanent happy expression.
🩺 Health notes
Patellar Luxation (slipping kneecap) is relatively common in the breed. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy has been reported. They are generally a robust and healthy breed due to their natural origins. Regular joint monitoring is recommended in older cats.
