📜 History & origin

The Neva Masquerade takes its name from the River Neva in St Petersburg and the 'masked' colourpoint pattern on its face. It emerged in Russia in the 1970s–80s as pointed kittens appeared within the native Siberian population, and was then developed as a colour variety of the Siberian. Major registries recognise it either as its own breed or as the pointed division of the Siberian. Like all Siberians it is a natural, slow-maturing breed shaped by Russia's harsh winters.

🧼 Care & grooming

The dense triple coat is surprisingly low-maintenance for its length — a thorough brush twice a week prevents mats, increasing to every other day during the heavy spring moult. Neva Masquerades mature slowly, reaching full size at around five years, and stay playful throughout. They are people-oriented cats that dislike being left alone for long stretches.

🩺 Health notes

Generally hardy thanks to a broad natural gene pool, but Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) can occur, so responsible breeders screen breeding cats by cardiac ultrasound. Maintaining a healthy weight protects the joints of this large-framed cat. Routine dental and preventive care is otherwise all most need.

Fun fact: Siberians and their Neva Masquerade variety are often called 'hypoallergenic' — many produce lower levels of the Fel d 1 allergen, though no cat is ever truly allergen-free.
