📜 History & origin
The Turkish Van developed naturally around Lake Van in eastern Turkey, where the harsh climate and access to water shaped its unique water-resistant coat. They were brought to the UK by Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday in 1955, who were astonished to see their cats deliberately enter water. The breed was recognised by the UK GCCF in 1969 and is still considered a national treasure in Turkey.
🧼 Care & grooming
Their cashmere-like coat is water-resistant and doesn't mat easily — weekly brushing suffices. They are independent and energetic; a large, stimulating environment is essential. They are not lap cats and prefer to interact on their own terms. Secure all water features if you don't want company in the bath.
🩺 Health notes
Generally robust and healthy. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) has been identified in some lines. Their naturally evolved heritage means they are less prone to genetic disorders than many pedigree breeds.
