Anchovy & Egg Omega Crisps

Tiny, intensely savoury oven crisps built around plain anchovies — a small but potent source of omega-3s that most cats find irresistible.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 6 plain anchovy fillets packed in water (not oil, salt or brine), thoroughly rinsed
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp plain oat flour (oats blitzed fine)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Rinse the anchovies under cold water for a good minute to wash off as much salt as possible, then pat them dry and mash to a paste.
  2. Beat the egg and stir it into the anchovy paste, then work in the oat flour until you have a thick, spoonable batter.
  3. Drop teaspoon-sized dots onto a lined baking tray and flatten each into a thin disc so it crisps evenly.
  4. Bake at 175°C (350°F) for about 12–15 minutes until firm and lightly golden.
  5. Cool completely on a rack — they crisp up as they cool — then offer one as a treat.
Nutrition: Small oily fish like anchovies are a concentrated source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which support a glossy coat, calmer skin and healthy joints. Baking with egg adds complete protein without any need for added fat.

📝 Notes

Anchovies are naturally salty, so rinse them well and treat these as an occasional treat rather than an everyday snack, especially for cats with heart or kidney concerns. Store in an airtight container for up to four days or freeze.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
