Homemade cat food
Quail & Pumpkin Novel-Protein Mince
Quail is a genuinely novel protein most cats have never eaten, making this gentle mince a useful option for cats on an elimination trial or with common food sensitivities.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 25 min
- Makes
- About 4 small portions
🧺 Ingredients
- 120 g quail meat, off the bone and finely chopped
- 1 tbsp cooked plain pumpkin, mashed
- 1 tbsp of the plain cooking water, to loosen
👩🍳 Method
- Gently poach or steam the quail meat in plain water until fully cooked through with no pink remaining.
- Lift the meat out, reserving a spoonful of the cooking water, and let it cool.
- Check the cooled meat carefully and remove any small bones or hard pieces.
- Finely chop or briefly pulse the quail to a mince suitable for your cat's size.
- Fold the mashed pumpkin through the mince and loosen with a little reserved water before serving a small portion.
Nutrition: As a novel protein, quail is unlikely to trigger a reaction in cats sensitised to chicken, fish or beef, which makes it valuable during a vet-guided elimination diet. The spoon of pumpkin adds gentle, soluble fibre that supports steady digestion.
📝 Notes
Because quail is only a partial recipe, serve it as a topper or occasional meal rather than a sole diet — homemade mixes are not complete without added taurine and a full vitamin-mineral balance from your vet. Refrigerate leftovers for up to two days.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
