Turkey Gizzard Chew Strips
Slow-dried turkey gizzard makes a firm, single-ingredient chew that gives teeth a real workout — a natural alternative to shop-bought dental sticks.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 3 hr (mostly hands-off)
- Makes
- About 15 strips
🧺 Ingredients
- 250 g turkey gizzards, trimmed of any tough connective tissue
👩🍳 Method
- Rinse the gizzards well and pat them thoroughly dry with kitchen paper.
- Slice each gizzard into thin strips no more than 5 mm thick so they dry evenly.
- Lay the strips in a single layer on a wire rack set over a baking tray, not touching.
- Dry in the oven at its lowest setting (around 70–80°C / 160–175°F) with the door propped slightly ajar for 2.5–3 hours, until firm and leathery but not brittle.
- Let the strips cool completely — they firm up further as they cool — before offering one as a supervised chew.
Nutrition: Turkey gizzard is pure muscle, rich in lean protein, iron and zinc, and naturally high in taurine — the amino acid cats must get from their diet for heart and eye health. The firm texture helps scrape plaque as the cat gnaws.
📝 Notes
Store in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for up to two months. Offer as an occasional chew rather than a meal, and always supervise in case a piece is bitten off whole. Introduce a small amount first to check it agrees with your cat.
