Trout & Pea Omega Flakes
Poached trout flaked through a few soft peas — an omega-rich, gently coloured topper to perk up a fussy eater's bowl.

- 25 min
- Makes
- About 3 small portions
🧺 Ingredients
- 80 g trout fillet, boneless and skinless
- 1 tbsp fresh or frozen peas, cooked until soft
- 1 tbsp plain water from cooking the fish, to moisten
👩🍳 Method
- Poach or steam the trout in plain water until it is opaque and flakes easily, then set it aside to cool.
- Cook the peas until soft and lightly mash them with a fork.
- Carefully flake the cooled trout, checking closely for any small bones and removing every one.
- Fold the flaked fish through the mashed peas and loosen with a little of the plain cooking water.
- Spoon a small amount over your cat's usual food and refrigerate the rest.
Nutrition: Trout brings the same prized omega-3 fatty acids as salmon and mackerel, supporting a glossy coat, healthy skin and calmer joints, while the small spoon of mashed pea adds moisture and a little gentle fibre. As an aromatic topper it is an easy way to make an ordinary bowl more tempting for a cat that needs coaxing to eat.
📝 Notes
Check the trout meticulously for bones — fish bones are a real hazard — and cook it fully; never serve raw. Keep it plain, with no salt, oil, onion or garlic. Oily fish is a treat topper rather than a daily staple, so serve it only now and then and in small amounts, alongside a complete, balanced diet. Peas are a safe occasional vegetable. Use within two days.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
