Trout & Sweet-Potato Omega Mash

Flaked trout — a gentler, less common oily fish — folded through a little sweet potato for a glossy-coat treat with a novel protein twist.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 80 g fresh trout fillet, skin off, bones removed
  • 1 tablespoon plain cooked, mashed sweet potato
  • A little plain water to loosen

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Run a finger carefully along the trout fillet and pick out every pin bone you can find.
  2. Steam or poach the trout in plain water until it flakes easily and is fully cooked through.
  3. Let it cool to lukewarm, then flake it into small pieces, checking once more for stray bones.
  4. Fold the flaked trout through the plain mashed sweet potato.
  5. Loosen to a soft, spoonable texture with a little plain water and serve a small amount.
  6. Refrigerate any leftovers and use within a day, as oily fish spoils quickly.
Nutrition: Trout supplies omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) for skin, coat and joint health along with protein and B vitamins, while a little sweet potato adds gentle fibre and beta-carotene.

📝 Notes

Because trout is a different protein from the salmon and tuna most cats meet often, it can be a useful occasional option for a cat that has grown bored of the usual fish — but like all oily fish it should stay an occasional treat, never a staple, since a fish-heavy diet can crowd out other nutrients. Debone thoroughly, cook it plainly, and avoid fish altogether for a cat with a known fish sensitivity.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
