Homemade cat food
Turkey Heart Taurine Nibbles
Chewy little baked nibbles made from turkey hearts — one of nature's richest sources of taurine, the amino acid a cat's heart and eyes cannot do without.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 40 min
- Makes
- About 15 nibbles
🧺 Ingredients
- 4 turkey hearts, trimmed of any large vessels and fat
- 1 tsp plain oat flour to bind (optional)
👩🍳 Method
- Rinse the turkey hearts and trim away any big blood vessels and obvious fat.
- Finely chop or briefly pulse them to a coarse mince, stirring in the oat flour if the mix is very wet.
- Press small nibble-sized pieces onto a lined baking tray.
- Bake at 170°C (340°F) for about 25–30 minutes until firm and cooked through with no pink centre.
- Cool fully before offering one or two as a treat.
Nutrition: Heart is technically a muscle, so it is lean and packed with protein, but it is also exceptionally high in taurine — an amino acid cats must get from their food to protect heart muscle and vision. That makes turkey heart a genuinely functional treat.
📝 Notes
Always cook heart thoroughly — never serve raw. Offer in small amounts alongside a complete, balanced diet; organ meats are nutrient-dense and a little goes a long way. Store chilled for up to three days or freeze.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
