📜 History & origin

The Egyptian Mau's spotted coat pattern is depicted in ancient Egyptian art dating back 3,000 years, though modern genetic studies suggest the breed's current ancestry is more mixed. Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy brought cats from Egypt to Italy and developed the modern breed in Rome in the 1950s, then exported them to the US. The CFA recognised the breed in 1977.

🧼 Care & grooming

Minimal grooming — weekly brushing of their silky coat. They are intensely loyal to their own family but wary of strangers and changes in environment. They are highly active and need a large, stable, enriched environment. Egyptian Maus are temperature-sensitive and prefer warm surroundings.

🩺 Health notes

Generally a healthy breed with no specific widespread genetic conditions. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy has been reported. Their sensitive nature means stress-related illness (URIs, IBS) can be triggered by environmental changes. Stable, calm environments are important for their health.
