📜 History & origin
The Manx cat developed naturally on the Isle of Man through a spontaneous mutation that causes tail shortening or absence. Their isolation on the island allowed the gene to spread through the cat population. Many legends surround their taillessness — including Noah closing the Ark door on a cat's tail. The breed has been shown since the first cat shows in the 1800s.
🧼 Care & grooming
Their double coat needs 2–3 weekly brushings. Manx are known for playing fetch, coming when called, and even walking on leads — they behave more like dogs than cats in many ways. Their tailless rear end can cause litter box issues; deeper boxes and regular cleaning help. Their powerful hindquarters make them extraordinary jumpers.
🩺 Health notes
Manx Syndrome is the most serious concern — a form of Spina Bifida caused by the same gene that causes taillessness. Symptoms include incontinence and paralysis; responsible breeders reduce this risk through careful pairing. Arthritis in the stub tail is also common. Their lifespan is somewhat shorter than average pedigree breeds.
