📜 History & origin
The Safari was developed in the United States in the 1970s, originally in a research setting studying feline leukaemia, by crossing the domestic cat with the Geoffroy's cat (Leopardus geoffroyi), a small spotted wild cat of South America. What makes the Safari genetically remarkable is a chromosome mismatch: the Geoffroy's cat carries 36 chromosomes while the domestic cat has 38, so first-generation hybrids end up with 37. That quirk, combined with the difficulty and expense of the initial wild crosses, has kept the breed exceptionally rare and largely in the hands of a few dedicated breeders. It remains an experimental breed recognised only in limited registries.

The short, fine coat is virtually maintenance-free, needing only an occasional brush. Care of a Safari is really about meeting its considerable physical and mental needs: this is an intensely energetic, intelligent cat that requires tall climbing structures, vigorous interactive play, puzzle feeders and ideally secure outdoor access or a catio to burn off its abundant energy. Safaris bond intensely with their families and can become bored and destructive if under-stimulated, so they suit owners prepared to devote real time to play and companionship.

Being built from robust domestic and hardy wild stock, the Safari is generally a healthy, vigorous cat with few breed-specific conditions reported, though its rarity means long-term health data is limited. The main challenges of the breed are reproductive rather than medical: the chromosome difference between the parent species makes early-generation males typically sterile, which is one reason the breed is so scarce. Later-generation cats living as pets benefit from the same routine preventive care — vaccination, parasite control and dental attention — as any domestic cat.
