🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 small skinless, boneless chicken breast (about 100 g)
  • 1 tbsp very finely diced ripe cantaloupe flesh (no seeds, no rind)
  • 2 tbsp plain unsalted chicken broth or water

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Poach the chicken in gently simmering water for 12–15 minutes, until cooked right through with no pink remaining.
  2. Lift it out, let it cool, then shred it finely with two forks.
  3. Scoop out a little ripe cantaloupe, remove every seed, cut away the rind and dice the flesh very small.
  4. Fold a tablespoon of the melon through the shredded chicken with a splash of broth to bind.
  5. Press into small bite-sized mounds and chill for 20 minutes before serving.
Nutrition: Chicken supplies lean, highly digestible protein, while a little cantaloupe adds water, beta-carotene and vitamin C for a light, hydrating summer treat.

📝 Notes

Cantaloupe flesh is non-toxic to cats and its aroma compounds are thought to be why some cats are drawn to it, but it is sugary, so keep it to the small amount here and treat these as an occasional snack rather than a meal. Remove all seeds and rind. Store covered in the fridge and use within 2 days.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
