🧺 Ingredients
- 80 g fresh cod fillet (skinless, boneless)
- 1 tablespoon cooked, finely mashed carrot
- A little of the plain poaching water to moisten
👩🍳 Method
- Poach or steam the cod in plain water until it turns opaque and flakes easily.
- Lift the fish out, let it cool, and flake it carefully, checking for any stray bones.
- Steam a little carrot until very soft and mash it smooth.
- Fold the mashed carrot through the flaked cod.
- Moisten with a spoonful of the plain cooking water to a soft, easy texture.
- Serve a small amount at room temperature; refrigerate any extra and use within one day.
Nutrition: Cod is a very lean white fish, high in easily-digested protein and low in fat, making it a good light treat for cats watching their weight, while a little mashed carrot adds soluble fibre and beta-carotene.
📝 Notes
Serve as an occasional treat rather than a staple, as fish should not make up the bulk of a cat's diet. Always cook the fish plainly with no salt, oil or seasoning, and check meticulously for bones before serving.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
