About 12 small bites

🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 tin sardines in spring water, drained (about 90 g)
  • 2 tbsp plain cooked pumpkin puree
  • 3 tbsp oat flour (or porridge oats blitzed fine)
  • 1 egg yolk

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment.
  2. Mash the drained sardines thoroughly, checking for and removing any hard bones.
  3. Mix in the pumpkin puree, oat flour and egg yolk to form a soft, mouldable dough.
  4. Roll small pea-sized bites and flatten each slightly on the tray.
  5. Bake for around 12–15 minutes until firm, then cool completely before serving one or two; store the rest in the fridge for up to three days.
Nutrition: Sardines are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that support a glossy coat, healthy skin and supple joints, while a spoonful of pumpkin adds soluble fibre to help keep digestion regular — a combination that makes these bites both tempting and gently tummy-friendly.

📝 Notes

Choose sardines in spring water, never in brine, oil or with added flavourings, and drain them well. Serve as an occasional treat rather than a meal, and offer the first bite in a small amount to check it agrees with your cat.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
